Interview Tips: Question, Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Okay, This question is not intended to test your ability to predict the future.

Often this question aims to know your long-term goals and see if they are in line with the goals of the institution and the position you have applied for.

If you apply for an Accountant position and then say that you see yourself as a marketing and investment expert while the institution has a long-term plan for you to become a company Accountant, it may show that your goals are not in line with the institution’s goals.

In answering this question, try to show to what extent your long-term plans and strategies will help the institution grow and achieve its goals.

Avoid giving information that could threaten people’s positions at the institution. For example “I see myself as the CEO of this company”. Praise can heal you.

Example: Firstly, I am very excited about this position since the company offers the opportunity for career progression. I see myself as a professional with exceptional expertise and experience in the field. Since I am also looking forward to taking managerial responsibilities, I see myself mentoring other junior employees to ensure the company’s survival and sustainability.

In your answer make sure you communicate (directly or indirectly);

– Your career goals
– Desire to learn and acquire more skills and knowledge
– How your growth will contribute towards organizational success

All the best.
